Bands in Fort Mill have a record of success! We receive the highest performance ratings, individual students are selected for elite honor bands, and we have earned the most prestigious band award in the state many times.

Band is a very FUN, rewarding, and
challenging experience and we really hope you will join our “Band family”. Every 6th-8th grade band student truly looks after one another musically and academically. You can also participate in both band and other school activities such as sports (school and club sports), cheer, dance, and various clubs (band is a class that takes place during school). Also, students can still participate in other related arts classes and school activities throughout the year.

Students who study music score 22-20 points higher in reading, math, and writing.
Art-based learning promotes creative problem solving and learning across different disciplines. Students who study music graduate from high school more (90% compared to 73%).

Watch this video about how learning an instrument helps brain development!

Our extra-curricular Honors groups take exciting performance trips at judged Carowinds Concert Festivals (extra-curricular 7th grade Honors Concert Band) and the GA Southern Star Music Festival (extra-curricular 8th grade Honors Symphonic Band). In high school, band students have traveled to Hawaii, Indianapolis, Ireland, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, California, Europe, and many other places for extra-curricular FUN!

Instruments (kids start instruments in 6th grade):
Also, check out
"Be Part of the Band" to see instrument demonstrations and learn more about Band. Students can learn to play flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, & percussion. Students experiment with all instruments the 1st month to create a "wish list". The director then thoroughly examines each student using their instrument "wish list". Afterwards, instruments are assigned based on the students "wish list" (choices are not needed at this time).

Please click this link for FAQs about PKMS Band. Remember, students CAN ONLY JOIN BAND IN SIXTH GRADE because they will be at least a year behind other students if they enrolled later. It is better to be in sixth grade band now and discontinue in seventh grade than to never try at all.

Band takes place DURING SCHOOL as a class and does not conflict with extra-curricular activities. Although band is a yearlong course, you can take band and other semester-long related arts classes! Students chose whether to continue band at the end of every year.
